Quick Guide Around Canacona

Quick Guide Around Canacona

Wide, empty stretches, pristine, sparkling blue seas and radiant sunsets await those who make the long journey to Goa’s extreme South. The taluka , though not part  of the mainstream tourism belt, takes you closer to these  elements.

Getting There

Connectivity isn’t as easy as in the rest of the State. State and locally run buses do run  on the 38 km long journey from Margao, but it’s advisable to hire a bike or rent a car if you can. State run buses ply from the main KTC terminus.

Palolem Beach

If North Goa’s heady  mix of nightlife and popular beaches appeal to party hipsters, the slow paced, Southern tropical Palolem vibe offers lazy hours on the beach, refreshing dips and an escape to immerse yourself in stillness. The beach can get crowded during the season, but it’s still relatively quiet. There are beach huts where you can stay.

Palolem has a mix of restaurants ranging from Indian to tastefully decorated organic cafes to entice your taste buds.

Visit Offbeat Islands

From Palolem beach take an exciting boat trip to Butterfly and Hanuman islands. The daily rides take you for an hour around the coast and you can get off at Hanuman Island for a dip.

Party Time

Of course, no beach is without a party scene and Palolem has one of the best in the State. Famous for its Silent Noise party and Leopard Valley, party goers will find the vibe catchy. However, caution is advised. Know your company and stay safe.

Sights to See

Cortigao Wildlife Sanctuary: One of Goa’s largest natural reserves is located in Canacona. You can spend a whole day exploring this rich habitat with family and friends.

Malikkakarjun Temple: This ancient temple is said to be 200 years old and hosts some spellbinding traditions. Shigmo, celebrated in March, sees the village spring into action. Besides Shigmo, there are the   unique festivals of  Veeramel and Shisharani.

Cabo de Rama Fort: One of the last fortifications on the Southern tip, the fort in its glory days at the forefront of battle, had 21 guns and military barracks. The leftover vestiges of the Portuguese influence are the turrets and cannons.
