Margao City

Margao city is a thriving metropolis with teeming shops and establishments. It is the second largest city in Goa and a major business and travel hub.

The city is known for it’s Indo-Portuguese architecture, picturesque beaches and villages. If you’re looking for some peace and quiet, then head South!

Churches and Temples

One of Margao’s defining historical structures is the Holy Spirit Church. It was built in the 16th century by Jesuits and completed only in 1675 in it’s present form. Another smaller chapel on the monte or hill is dedicated to Our Lady of Piety. A trip up the winding hill is worth the time as the views are breath-taking. In the city, the Damodar sal is of great significance. This is a small private temple dedicated to Damodar. It is located on Abade Faria Road and it is here Swami Vivekananda stayed on his visit to Goa in 1892.

Market Watch

Catch the local flavour and colours at the bazaar. The market is close to the Margao Residency and you can take in the sights of the local spices, heaps of red chillies, and the Goan pork sausages, a delicacy in Goan cuisine. You can pick up traditional eats and drinks from the various vendors, along with some keepsakes from your trip.

Shopping

If you’re in the market don’t miss picking up local specials like red chillies, local vinegar and coconut oil. If you’re a non-vegetarian than the sausages are a must try.

Heritage Homes

Margao is a heritage city. The unique, Indo Portuguese styled mansions that line Abade Faria Road or around the Church square add to the city’s charm. The famous seven gabled home belonging to former judge Eurico Silva is in the close vicinity. 

Beaches

Margao is centrally connected to the South Goan beach belt. The long stretches from Colva, Benaulim are the closest, about 7 kms away. Further along the coast are Mobor, Varca, Cavelossim beaches. You can sit at a shack and take in an intoxicating sunset. Read more about South Goa’s beaches here

Entertainment

If you’re in the city looking for something to do, you can relax by the beach and enjoy live music or you could catch a film at the INOX theatres or catch a cultural program at the Ravindra Bhavan.
