“Shivshahichi Garjana” Roars in Mapusa: A Historic Spectacle Unfolds as 150 Artistes Bring the Legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Alive in Goa
The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, commemorated Shiv Jayanti with a grand cultural presentation titled “Shivshahichi Garjana” at Shree Bodgeshwar Ground, Mapusa. The mega production, mounted on a specially designed revolving stage and performed by over 150 artistes, brought alive the life, valour and enduring legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in a powerful and immersive format.
Goa’s identity is shaped by its layered history and rich cultural heritage. ‘Shivshahichi Garjana’ is a tribute that brings alive the extraordinary journey of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, especially his connection with Gomantak and its people. As a Department, we remain committed to curating experiences that celebrate our civilisational icons through contemporary formats that engage citizens and inspire the youth. This is heritage presented with scale, substance and pride.
This mega production was conceptualised to ensure that history is experienced, not just narrated. The integration of a revolving stage, a 150-member ensemble cast and advanced drone technology created an immersive storytelling experience. The focus remains on delivering cultural programmes of high calibre that honour legacy while elevating the standards of public events in Goa.
The event was graced by Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Information Technology, Electronics & Communications and Printing & Stationery; Shri Joshua D’Souza, Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly & MLA, Mapusa Constituency; Shri Kuldeep Arolkar, Managing Director, GTDC; Shri Jayesh Kankonkar, Assistant Director, GTDC; Shri Deepak Narvekar, Deputy General Manager (Hotels & Marketing), along with Sarpanches and ZP Members.
The theatrical production placed special emphasis on the travel of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to Goa and his historic connection with Goa and its people, portraying episodes that highlighted strategic foresight, administrative brilliance and his deep engagement with coastal regions. The role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was portrayed by Shri Shantanu Moghe, while the character of Jijamata was powerfully enacted by Smt Alka Kubal, adding emotional depth and authenticity to the narrative.
A major highlight of the evening was a spectacular drone show featuring 300 drones that illuminated the night sky in 12 breathtaking formations. The synchronised display showcased symbolic imagery including the Bhagwa Flag, Raigad Fort, and the coronation of Maharaj, among other historic motifs. The precision, scale and visual storytelling of the aerial spectacle drew resounding applause from the audience and added a contemporary dimension to the celebration.
The event witnessed an impressive turnout, reflecting the deep reverence for the Maratha warrior king and the enduring cultural connect shared by the people of Goa. Through “Shivshahichi Garjana,” the Department of Tourism once again reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating heritage in dynamic and engaging formats, strengthening cultural consciousness while creating memorable public experiences for citizens and visitors alike.
