The jackfruit festival of Ponsachem is also celebrated in some villages on the occasion of Sao Joao.
The idea of the festival comes from Sao Joao itself. The lyrics of a popular Sao Joao song read, “Sasu-
main ponos dhadla,” meaning “mother-in- law has sent jackfruit”. The Socorro Socio-Art and Cultural
Association, Porvorim, are responsible for highlighting the importance of this fruit during the Sao
The villagers celebrate this festival by making various sweet and savoury preparations out of the flesh of the jackfruit. Some of these include papads, sattam, jacada and vegetable dishes which use the jackfruit.
